Question
Whangarei has flooding issues in some industrial areas. What flooding mitigation exists at Port Nikau?
Answer

The Northland Regional Council has recently updated the district’s flood maps, which show that developed areas of Port Nikau are NOT at risk from flooding from either 10-year or 100-year flood events. This contrasts with large areas of the CBD which are identified on the flood maps as being at risk of a 100-year flood event.
The flood maps include an allowance for the effects of climate change, including higher intensity rainfall and sea level rise. The flood maps are available for viewing at: http://www.nrc.govt.nz/floodmaps

Question
Is Port Nikau built on reclaimed land?
Answer

Yes, much of the Whangarei CBD and lower Port Road area is built on land reclaimed by the Harbour Board in the 1960’s. The land has had over 50 years to settle and consolidate.
The area now subdivided as Port Nikau Business Park was used in the early 2000s as log storage for exporters. This effectively ‘pre-loaded’ most sites. CPT data is available on request.
