Whangarei has flooding issues in some industrial areas. What flooding mitigation exists at Port Nikau?
The Northland Regional Council has recently updated the district’s flood maps, which show that developed areas of Port Nikau are NOT at risk from flooding from either 10-year or 100-year flood events. This contrasts with large areas of the CBD which are identified on the flood maps as being at risk of a 100-year flood event.
The flood maps include an allowance for the effects of climate change, including higher intensity rainfall and sea-level rise. The flood maps are available for viewing here.
